ASUU AND THE ‘MOTHER OF ALL STRIKES!’

ASUU AND THE ‘MOTHER OF ALL STRIKES!’
When I read a recent remark of the ASUU National President, Professor Ukachukwu Awuzie, in the dailies, it made me laugh.
He said that the current strike, which began on the 23rd of June 2009, would be the strike that would end all strikes. According to him, it was the ‘mother of all strikes.’
It’s funny because that’s what they kind of say every time there is a strike action.
Well, if the professor is thinking in line of the conventional gestation period in humans, we still have about seven months to go. Been that it’s a nine month ‘course’ and all.
Greatest Nigerian students! I think it’s time you dust your SSCE certificates and go job hunting.
Another interesting story coming from ASUU of recent is that they want to publish the names of all Nigerian public office holders, from the Federal to the Local government levels, who have their children/wards in schools abroad.
Ehn, ehn!
“What is that one going to solve? These people had better call off this strike, and stop all these jokes because they aren’t funny. I’m tired of staying at home!” an exasperated student of the Olabisi Onabanjo University(OOU) said to me.
I’m sure the ASUU executives have good intentions. And I can remember that an esteemed journalist, Mr. Azubuike Ishiekwiene, of the Punch Newspaper, suggested such a course of action in the early days of the strike.
Seriously, we know that a lot of Nigerian politicians have their children in good schools abroad. Like the Minister of Education, Professor Sam Egwu, also said, a lot of lecturers have their children in foreign universities as well.
I don’t think Nigerian politicians are usually moved by publications, whether in the newspapers or magazines.
Early into the strike, there was a hoopla about the decision of Professor Sam Egwu, to lavish about one hundred and twenty million Naira on his twenty fifth wedding anniversary when university students were idle at home. Nothing came out of it!
The ASUU can go ahead with the publication, but please call off the strike now! We want to go back to school.
Thank you.
Remember, we’re just gisting.
