We have heard of PROJECT
FAME, NIGERIAN IDOLS, NAIJA SINGS, NAIJA CAN SING, NAIJA IS SINGING……and a
whole lot of other musical competitions. There are lots of dance competitions,
modeling competitions, cooking competitions and virtually every type of competition
in Nigeria.
But how many reading
competitions do we have? How many major companies sponsor mainstream literary
events? The answer is blowing in the wind.
Meanwhile, books are
also a form of entertainment and they help to relax the mind while strengthening
it in the process. Books are very important and their benefits can never be
overstated. Indeed it is said that READERS ARE LEADERS, and that your life
changes based on two parameters which are THE BOOKS YOU READ and THE PEOPLE YOU
MEET.
We need to have a better
reading culture in Nigeria because books provide a world of oppourtunities.
Some graduates are described as half-baked simply because they cannot construct
a single statement in English or write a letter. If such graduates had opened
up their minds and read more books like novels, it will undoubtedly have
boosted their vocabulary, and even diction.
Some people will say
that, “If you want to hide a secret from a Nigerian, you should keep it in a
book. What an insult! Isn’t it also said that he who can read but does not read
is worse than the one who cannot read at all.
We also need to grow
beyond the conventional sense of regarding books as having to be in print.
Books could come electronically (ebooks) or as audio books. But we just need
to get the nation reading. It cuts across tribe, age and gender…..learning
never stops, and in this world of today, information grows obsolete pretty
quickly.
Parents ought to be
concerned because the trend seems to be worsening gradually. Youths ought
to be concerned because, mahn, it’s not all about dollar and pounds,
information is the top currency in the world today.
The Bring Back The Book Campaign (BBBC) is a campaign team
working to get Mr. Books elected into our schools, churches, mosques, airports.....virtually
all our public places. It's not all about toy guns and Barbie dolls, children
also have to be exposed to books at an early age.
We go round visiting secondary schools, churches and mosques.
We talk to the children and their parents, and also distribute books to them.
We need the support of people who are aware of the importance
of books and who are passionate about propagating its gospel. You can join us
by volunteering to work with the campaign team and going on our road tours(I’m
sure, you’ll enjoy it!)
You can also join us by donating either new or used textbooks
for onward distribution to the kids.
Thank you.
